This painting is a depiction of Diana Ross’s character “Tracy” in the 1975 movie “Mahogany”.

The significance of this piece being created by a Chicago based artist goes beyond the aesthetic

elements of a portrait.

In the movie, “Tracy” is a young black woman who lives on the South Side of Chicago. She’s a

fashion designer working as a sales associate at Marshal Fields on State street, taking fashion

design classes at night. She gets an opportunity to move to Rome Italy to be a fashion model and

becomes a successful fashion designer. She makes her dream come true.

This movie was extremely impactful for painter Natalie Osborne, raised in Tulsa Oklahoma. “Tracy”

is one of the reasons she chose to attend The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “Tracey” is an

example of how representation really does matters and continues to be a source of inspiration for the Chicago based painter.
